FAQ's

You can use this form to renew or pay your LawRight membership, and you also have the option to make an additional donation if you wish.

Unfortunately, LawRight has changed membership platforms and no longer offers automatic membership renewal. We will email you when your next membership payment is due with a payment reminder and link to pay.

First year – $25

2-3 years – $125

4-5 years – $220

6+ years – $350

You can pay by credit card (including AMEX), and EFT.

LawRight improves the lives of vulnerable people through strategic partnerships with pro bono lawyers. Your membership enables LawRight to coordinate pro bono resources, matching your expertise with our vulnerable clients. We provide pro bono barristers with instructing lawyers, assistance with disbursements, training and tailored opportunities.

Barristers’ membership fees and generous donations have supported LawRight to develop and grow innovative pro bono programs. The Bar Association is a member of LawRight and is represented on LawRight’s management committee.

Membership

MEMBERSHIP

LawRight members include barristers, law firms, ILP’s, and corporate and government legal units. They share a commitment to improving access to justice in Queensland.

support access to justice by:

  • taking pro bono referrals
  • providing volunteers to support direct services such as the Community & Health Justice Partnerships, Court & Tribunal Services, Enforcement Hearing Duty Lawyer Service, Migration Panel, Homelessness Law, and more
  • sending secondees to work more closely with LawRight staff
  • providing financial support to LawRight through membership fees to help make pro bono sustainable, targeted and effective.

If you join as a member, you can determine the level of your pro bono work, if any. Joining does not create an obligation to do a certain amount of pro bono.

Each year 30,000 pro bono hours from LawRight members increases access to housing, income and legal rights and improves the health and wellbeing of vulnerable people.

To join as a member of LawRight, regardless of category, please download, fill out and return the membership application form with payment. We will then organise for your membership to be formally approved by our management committee.

BARRISTERS MAKING AN IMPACT AS LAWRIGHT MEMBERS

LawRight helps barristers to deliver pro bono work in a strategic and efficient way.

Your membership enables LawRight to coordinate pro bono resources, matching your expertise with our vulnerable clients. We provide pro bono barristers with instructing lawyers, assistance with disbursements, training and tailored opportunities. The Bar Association of Queensland is a member of LawRight, and LawRight’s management committee includes several barristers and a BAQ representative.


Member barristers support vulnerable clients with civil law matters by

  • Appearing in Court of Appeal, Supreme & District Courts, Federal Courts & Federal Circuit Courts, QCAT and other courts and tribunals
  • Providing advice, including on prospects of success
  • Guiding clients of LawRight’s Court and Tribunal Services
  • Advice and one-off representation at the Enforcement Hearing Duty Barrister Service
  • Conducting Fair Work settlement conferences
  • Conducting mediations

Barrister membership fees are based on years since your first call to the Bar

  • First-year barristers – $25 per year
  • 2-3 years at the Bar – $125 per year
  • 4-5 years at the Bar – $220 per year
  • 6+ years at the Bar – $350 per year


Fundraising and events

Barristers are strong supporters of LawRight through donations and attendance at our events such as Red Wine for Justice, Queensland Legal Walk and the Public Interest Address.


BAQ Referral Scheme

In addition to our member services, LawRight coordinates a Pro Bono Referral Service on behalf of the Bar Association of Queensland. It is free to join for BAQ members, and you do not need to be a member of LawRight. Participants receive emails about pro bono referrals and can choose if and when you take on a matter.
